The old canal port of Dijon

Port of Dijon

To the left some mules are working with a loaded barge. In the back ground is the original hydraulic bridge designed by Effiel, the bridge would be lifted to allow boats to pass underneath. On the right there are tree logs, one of the principle items transported by barges at this time. The lock is being filled, probably for the barge to the left. It is also possible to see women washing laundry to the right of the man with the dog.

Dijon jousting

A large crowd of people gather to watch a jousting competition during the festival on the waters of the Port of Dijon. In the back ground you can see the Obelisk which was built to commemorate the construction of the canal.

The buildings beside the monument have all disappeared as the port is now a very beautiful garden and park.

The jousting competitions were very popular before, with teams battling each other.

Close up of the nautic battle

This is a close up of the previous photo so that you can see the two jousters with their shields and arms. The objective is to push the opponent off the boat and into the water. The oarsmen row the boats to pick up speed before the attack.

Just behind the jouster on the left you will notice a group of policemen.
