The canal at Montbard

Montbard Ecluse

A wonderful image of barges and people along the canal tow-path in the town of Montbard. When you zoom into the image there are a lot of people on the bridge and the lock to the right. At first we thought that it was a change of shift for the workers in the factory which is in the background. However we noticed that people were very well dressed and assume that the photo was taken on a Sunday or holiday.

The barges are wooden hulled and appear to be loading or unloading.

The factory still exists today, although it has changed purpose, has less chimneys, but is still the economic heart of Montbard, making parts for the TGV trains.
