Barges moored in the town of Tonnerre

The canal port of Tonnere

This postcard show the importance that commercial cargo barges once had. The town of Tonnere was an important port of call with loaded and empty barges coming and going all year around.

The empty barges are on the righgt whilst the loaded barges are on the left and leaving just enough passage for a boat to pass in between them. Another intresting point is the mast on the barges, which was used to attach the rope to the horses or mules which then hauled the boat.

To the lower left there is a group of men with one of them fishing.
