The River Serin with it's source in the Auxois village of  Beurey-Beauguay flows northwards and through Chablis to join the River Yonne a couple of kilometres from Migennes. The town of Noyers-sur-Serin is almost encircled by the River Serin.

The history of the town begins before the Gallo-roman times.

Lord Clérembaud erected the first walled fortifications around the original castle in 1190. Later Hughes of Noyer the building was transformed into a three-walled fortification, and ramparts were constructed around the village

During the Wars of Religion in 1568, the Prince of Condé, lord of Noyers, sought refuge in the town but was forced to flee to avoid Catherine de Médicis's armies.

Duprat, the Baron of Vitteaux, installed himself in the castle in 1592 to pillage the surrounding area.

In 1599, Henry IV decided to tear down the castle after Duprat left. The medieval town's decline was sped up by Louis XVI, who diverted the national road away from Noyer. The population of almost 2,000 has declined to 600.
