The Canal Port of Dijon

The tunnel of the Burgundy canal at Pouilly.

On the right you can see two wooden barges, one with two people standing on the stern and a huge rudder which tells us that the barge was horse-drawn.

In the background, the obelisk which was erected in 1786 can be seen. Also visible are some of the old depots where barges would deliver building materials for the growing city of Dijon.

The first barge from the River Saone arrived in the port on the 14th of December 1808,  and a barge arrived from Paris on the 2nd of January 1883.
